Walden Pond

Monday was Steve's birthday, and since we couldn't go to Schoephle Garden, as is tradition, we went to Walden Pond instead -- not a bad subsitute. Walden Pond is hardley a pond. Erin says it's a favorite place to swim and lie on the beach.

There is a trail that goes all the way around the pond. We only went about the third of the way to see the foundation of Thoreau's Cabin. Apparently it was only recently discovered.

Here are the markers indicating the location and size of the Cabin. Erin did a Winter Term project here and researched Throreau's writings on site!

This is Orchard House! -- the home of the Alcotts and setting of Little Women. Erin was a tour guide here last summer and will be working here again this year. She took us on our own private tour which was AMAZING! It was interesting to learn about Louisa and to hear the real stories of her family. I bought Little Men while we were there because it's Erin's favorite and I've never read it.  It has lots of interesting references to Louisa's father's unique teaching methods.

I would love to see those places!
Throreau and Louisa May Alcott were part of my reading growing up. What a beautiful place Waldon Pond is!!...and it must have been fun to see where Louisa lived and to hear about her life.
