A Wink and a Smile

Where has the art of winking gone!! We've let a truly expressive form of communication slide away from our physical vocabulary like sand through a sieve. I'm on a mission to bring it back.
First we must understand its main "problem" so that we can learn to turn it into an asset. This essential characteristic is that a wink has many meanings and can be easily misunderstood if you haven't mastered the proper techniques. Here's a guide to help you on your own mission to achieving greater expression in every aspect of your life.

Hi There (most common)

  • communicates: howdy, I see you, you are my friend, it's nice to see you, etc.
  • one-eyed
  • quick
  • little or no lip movement
  • use when otherwise engaged; ie. talking with another person, typing a paper, doing yoga
Flirty (most useful ;) )
  • communicates: hellllooo, great smile, find me after class, busy Saturday?
  • one-eyed
  • a little longer than the "Hi There" wink
  • small, subtle smile (for variety, try one-sided)
  • use when you want attention, great for classroom settings, appropriate for significant others
Nictation or "The Blink Wink"
  • communicates: I'm glad you're here, or are you thinking what I'm thinking?
  • two-eyed
  • not too quick (must be distinct from blinking), sustain eye contact afterwards
  • gentle smile, no teeth
  • use when you have been with someone for a while, but not talking; good in small groups
Inside wink
  • communicates: you know what I mean?, emphasizes verbal irony (Not!)
  • one-eyed (can be emphasized by using your less cooperative eye)
  • long and pronounced
  • mouth open
  • use for inside jokes, to fool people into thinking you know something they don't
  • note: often verbified as "wink, wink" though rarely performed in that fashion; if you have a good, practiced winker, go ahead; not recommended for beginners
Well boys and girls, those are the basics. There are, of course, many other types of winks, combinations, etc., but these few should get you started. Happy winking. ;)

Oh, no! I'm already a serial winker! I don't need any encouragement. People already tell me to stop winking at them, already.
