So, I've been a little picture happy lately. I suppose it's time I write something. Because these moments will be coming to a close for me soon, I'd like to take the time to share one of many "Only at Oberlin" moments from today.
Picture this. I'm sitting in Environmental Policy, teacher dressed in jeans and a fleece inscribed "Rocky Mountain Protection Coalition." Class is held in a building that creates all of its own energy from bio and solar sources, cleans it's own water through bio technology, and is made entirely of recycled material from the carpet to the door handles. The girl two seats to the left is knitting socks and to the right a friend is sampling organic dried fruit. The first class member gets up to present their project. Unshaven, with dark curly locks hanging from underneath his loose earth-toned beanie, he sits down on the desk in front of the classroom, lifts his un-soled legs exposing his mismatching socks and crosses them in Indian-style on the table. From this position he begins to discuss the technical and economic feasibility and the environmental impact of replacing mountain-top removal coal mining in Appalachia with wind turbines. Ahh . . . Only at Oberlin :)

I think you're right....only at Oberlin! I know that is not something I would have seen at Eastern Washington U. However, diversity is a grand thing! I bet "people watching" is much more entertaining there than it is in Cheney, Washington!
Shani, don't sell us short over in eastern WA. I grew up in Spokane and still call it home. And there are plenty of wild peoples to see. They usually drive lifted trucks and wear flannel carhart shirts, instead of sitting cross-legged on tables in enviornmental issues classes.
You're right! I probably didn't think of that because after seeing such things so often it doesn't seem so unusual anymore!
