I sure loved to hear him speak, I'll miss him.Lindseyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12053264986327987210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10920758.post-42116872222511132312008-02-03T16:24:00.000-05:002008-02-03T16:24:00.000-05:00Mary, I knew you would have written about Presi...Mary,
I knew you would have written about President Hinckley! Thanks for sharing that wonderful article.
What an incredible life Gordon B. Hinckley lived! What a great example he set!
One of the things I will remember most about him was his tireless work ethic. He literally wore out his life in service to the Lord. Two days before he died he was in his office attending to the work of the church. His father's words to him on his mission, "Forget yourself and go to work" and the scripture about "if you lose your life for my sake, you shall find it" became his motto for the rest of his life.
Another thing I loved about him was his sense of humor. I loved how he waved his cane in greeting. He never took himself too seriously, yet took the work of the Lord very seriously. He was so positive in his attitude toward life and could always make people smile. I loved it when he told us to not be "pickle-suckers".
He loved people and they felt it. Although he hated to travel, he spent his life doing it because he wanted to get out among the people.
I will always remember some of his counsel...the six B's, "stand a little taller", "raise the bar",
"be a little kinder", are among the things I will remember.
I can't think of President Hinckley without thinking of miracles. I remember when he announced that he wanted 100 temples by 2001. I thought, "How can that happen?", but happen it did and with even more temples than he said. The creation of smaller temples made it possible.
He was instrumental in beginning the Orchestra at Temple Square. He had the foresight to build the Conference Center. Those two things have been blessings in our lives as we have participated in Christmas programs and other events held there-even though the Deseret Gym had to be sacrificed in the process.
The quorums of the 70 have expanded according to scripture as the church has grown under his direction. I believe someone said that 1/3 of the current members were baptized during his presidency!
I was thinking of David and how he might react to this event. For most of David's life President Hinckley has been prophet. My childhood prophet was David O. McKay. I remember how much I loved him. He was known for his love of his wife and for his emphasis on the family. I wasn't sure there could ever be a better prophet. I have come to understand that each prophet brings his own unique set of skills to the job and is placed there in the Lord's wisdom to do what must be done at that particular time.
Although I am sad for us, I am so happy for President Hinckley who didn't want to be apart from his beloved wife, Margery, for very long!

PS
Thanks, Tonya, for sharing that great story about President Hickley! Your comment about mattering as much as the influential, powerful people of the world was exactly right. He loved everyone and treated them all alike..just as the Savior did.Susannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14474153175925798381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10920758.post-66976011996519585882008-02-03T16:08:00.000-05:002008-02-03T16:08:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Susannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14474153175925798381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10920758.post-8011203737998545992008-02-02T01:28:00.000-05:002008-02-02T01:28:00.000-05:00I love this article. (1/3 of the girls had gotten food poisoning and were at the hospital, including amber) but the rest of us got to hear him speak and he (and sister hinkley) personally shook each of our hands. It was such a powerful message to visit a random girls camp..we mattered as much as the influential, powerful people in the world. He's been my favorite president ever since =)Tonyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07446320598939851435noreply@blogger.com
